Often, I ask clients to provide me with their Google Analytics tracking code so I can embed it into their websites that I’m building. Usually, they have no clue what I am asking or what to do. Because I’m lazy and don’t want to walk clients through the process anymore, I’ve created this video to show you step-by-step what to do.
Step 1) Go to https://analytics.google.com
Step 2) Click the link in the top-right corner “SIGN IN”
Step 3) When you click the link, it will trigger a drop-down menu. Select “Analytics”
Step 4) Sign in with your Gmail account (If you don’t have one, you will need one)
Step 5) Once signed in, click the tab titled, “ADMIN” in the top menu. You will now see three columns on the screen. They are ACCOUNT, PROPERTY, VIEW.
Step 6) If this is your first account, select the drop-down in the ACCOUNT column and then select, “Create new account”
Step 7) You are in the new account section. With the “Website” tab selected, fill in your account name. (This could be the name of your business)
Step 8) Website Name should be the name of your website
Step 9) Website URL is the address that takes you to the homepage of your website.
Step 10) Select the most relevant Industry Category
Step 10) Pick your time-zone
Step 11) Select your Data Sharing Settings options. I recommend leaving all the options selected
Step 12) Click the blue button, “Get Tracking ID” at the bottom
Step 13) Read the Terms of Service that pops up and click, “I Accept” button
Step 14) Great. You now have your tracking ID. Scroll to the top and you will see the section “Tracking ID” with a number below it. Give this number to your developer.
Step 15) If your website developer needs the Website Tracking code, you will find it in the box just a bit lower. It will start with <script> and end with </script> Copy everything including the <script> codes.
